Air Bearing Turntables Versus Conventional Turntables

A new white paper that describes the top 14 applications of air bearing (or “air caster”) technology has been published to airfloat.com. The white paper is based on Airfloat’s nearly 50 years of experience in the field. Below is an excerpt:

Heavy Duty Turntables

tt and forkliftIn comparison to conventional mechanical systems, air bearings provide a low‐cost design approach for turntables. This is also an excellent application for air bearings since movement is constrained to rotation and the surface is controlled. Maintenance costs for air bearing turntables are lower since they have fewer moving parts.

To date, air bearing turntables have been used mostly for line feed applications. Example: Containers for parts are placed on the turntable. When full or empty, the turntable is rotated to provide another container for the line feed. This reduces time spent waiting for a forklift to handle the same containers.
